Uganda's rental market varies enormously — from UGX 200,000/month shared rooms in Nansana to UGX 5,000,000/month fully furnished apartments in Kololo. Knowing how much you can afford prevents heartbreak.
The 30% Rule
Take your monthly take-home pay and multiply by 0.30. That is your maximum comfortable rent. If you earn UGX 2,000,000/month, aim for no more than UGX 600,000/month in rent.
Don't Forget the Deposit
Most Ugandan landlords require one to three months' rent as a security deposit upfront. Budget for this separately before you start viewing properties.
Hidden Costs
Water, UMEME electricity, internet, service charges, and garbage collection are often not included in the quoted rent. Always ask what's covered.
